An Early Summer Pre-Wedding in Hokkaido, Japan

June in Hokkaido asks something of you before it gives anything back. Sunrise arrives around four in the morning this far north, which means we met in the dark, and Sawa and Steven showed up ready, coffee in hand, while the streets of Otaru still belonged to no one. Then the light came over the canal, soft and gold on the water, and every early alarm made sense. Early morning light is quiet in a way that midday never is. Everything feels unhurried, which is exactly how I want a couple to feel on a day like this.

Sawa is Japanese and Steven is originally from France, and Hokkaido made sense for them the moment we started planning. Early summer here feels both deeply Japanese and wide open in a way that reminds Steven of the countryside back home. A pre-wedding session should say something about the two people in it, and this island in June, green from edge to edge, said it well.

Otaru holds more than good light for these two. Steven proposed to Sawa right at the iconic steam clock, the bronze landmark that has chimed over Sakaimachi Street for decades, steam rising on the hour while the town moves around it. Returning there for their pre-wedding session turned the location into something no scouting list could offer: the exact spot where this chapter of their story began. We photographed them beside the clock in the early quiet, before the crowds arrived, and those frames carry a weight the rest of the day could only build on.

From Otaru we made our way to Lake Shikotsu, where the water sits still and impossibly clear against hills in full leaf. Then Mt. Yotei. There is not much I can add that the photographs do not already say. The mountain is stunning, full stop. In June the last of the snow traces its summit while everything below runs green, and it anchors the horizon the way Mt. Fuji does further south. Standing beneath it with a couple in love is the kind of moment I started this work for. We finished the day at Moerenuma Park in Sapporo, where the long afternoon light of early summer moved across Isamu Noguchi's landscape and gave us clean lines, open lawns, and a completely different mood from where the morning began. Four locations, one long northern day, and each frame feels like its own chapter.

I photographed the entire session on Leica. This is how I work every wedding and every pre-wedding, because the way these cameras render light and skin feels timeless to me, and timeless is the entire point. These images are not made for this year. They are made for the couple Sawa and Steven will be in thirty years, looking back.
